What is a Macro?
Macros in Excel are not the same as those in Word, but they share some similarities.
Macros
When you click on the “Macros” button in the excel toolbar, a new macro panel opens.
Macro commands can be saved to a personal macro, a built-in Excel function, or a publicly shared one. They can be executed manually when the macro is triggered or automatically when the workbook is opened or closed.
Use the “Add Command” button to create a new macro or edit an existing one.
Commands to create a new macro
The red “+” button on the command bar displays all of the available Excel commands to execute macros.
Click to add a new command.
Click to select a command from the list.
Clicking on the down arrow next to the command name displays more information about the command.
Click to add the command to a macro.
Click to remove a command from the macro.
Click to cancel the current selection.
Use the drop-down menu to select commands from the current selection.
Macro categories
Use the drop-down menu to display the categories of commands.
Templates
Use the drop-down menu to display the templates used to create the current macro.
Tasks
Use the drop-down menu to display the tasks used to create the current macro.
The Macros Window
Use the “Window” button in the macro toolbar to open the Macros window.
The Macros window has four panels.
The “Macros” panel contains the list of all of the macros saved in Excel.
The “Functions” panel contains the list of all of the Excel functions.
The “Tasks” panel contains the list of all of the tasks used to create the current macro.
The “Templates” panel contains the list of all of the templates used to create the current macro.
Use the “Close Macros” button in the top right of the Macros window to close the Macros window.
Use the “Options” button in the top right of the Macros window to display the options to control the behavior of macros.
